About RentCheckMe

Helping tenants understand their rent control protections

Our Mission

RentCheckMe was created to help tenants across the United States quickly and easily understand whether their rental property is protected by rent control or tenant protection laws. We believe that access to clear, accurate information about rent control is essential for tenants to understand their rights and make informed decisions.

Rent control laws can be complex and vary significantly by city, county, and state. Our goal is to make this information more accessible by providing a simple tool that checks your address against official property records and rent control databases.

How It Works

When you enter an address on RentCheckMe, our system:

  1. Validates the address using official address validation services
  2. Looks up property information from official sources, including:
    • Construction year or certificate of occupancy date
    • Property type (single-family, multi-family, condo, etc.)
    • Number of units
    • Other relevant property characteristics
  3. Checks against rent control rules for that jurisdiction, including:
    • Local city or county rent control ordinances
    • Statewide rent control laws (like California's AB 1482)
    • Rent stabilization programs (like New York City's rent stabilization)
  4. Provides results explaining what protections may apply to your property

Our Data Sources

We use official, publicly available data sources to provide accurate information:

San Francisco

For San Francisco addresses, we use official property assessment data from the San Francisco Open Data Portal, the same database used by city officials. This includes construction year and property details from the Assessor-Recorder's office.

New York City

For New York City addresses, we use the official NYC Rent Stabilized Building Registry from the NYC Rent Guidelines Board to identify buildings with rent stabilized units.

Other Jurisdictions

For other cities and states, we combine property information from multiple sources including:

  • Public property records and databases
  • Official city and state registries
  • Verified property databases
  • Official rent control ordinances and laws

We are continuously expanding our coverage as we add more jurisdictions and data sources.
