Libertyville is a village in Lake County in Chicago's north suburbs, known for its historic downtown and family-oriented community. Illinois state law (50 ILCS 825/5) prohibits local rent control, so Libertyville cannot enact any rent stabilization. Chicago's RLTO protections do not extend to Libertyville. The Illinois Security Deposit Return Act (765 ILCS 710) and Illinois common law habitability rules are the primary tenant protections in the village.

The Illinois Security Deposit Return Act (765 ILCS 710) requires your landlord to return your deposit within 30 days of the end of your tenancy, along with an itemized written statement of deductions. For buildings with 25 or more units, annual interest must be paid on deposits held more than six months. Wrongful withholding may entitle you to twice the amount withheld plus attorney's fees. Photograph the unit at move-in and move-out and leave your forwarding address in writing when you move out.
To remove a Libertyville tenant, a landlord must serve proper written notice and file with the Lake County Circuit Court to obtain a judgment. Month-to-month tenants must receive 30 days' written notice. For nonpayment of rent, landlords serve a 5-day pay-or-vacate notice. Lease violations require a 10-day notice to cure.
